As people saw his videos, he gained notoriety and has been able to make music videos for some artists that he has been a fan of since his youth, saying,
“I found myself doing videos with artists I listened to growing up. It was very surreal.”
When an artist contacts Will Thomas with interest to have a music video for a certain song, he likes to listen to a song many times over a few days. Sometimes he quickly comes up with an idea, and sometimes he seeks inspiration in other videos and films that he has seen. He tries to find imagery that fits what he wants the video to look like, using the emotion of the song to guide the images and colors.
A former mentor told him, “every time you hear a new sound, something should happen.” He tries to make his video react to the varying sounds heard from the artists and the beat of a song, which is why you will often see several different clips appearing in a single second. He wants to take the opportunity of each of the many frames within a second of video that allow for a different image to be shown.
“One of the things that I do when I’m watching a video that I’ve cut is I watch it and when I start getting bored watching it, then I know it is going too slow.”
