John 3:17 – “For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”
If you’ve seen the new trailer for Superman, you know that it looks pretty good. There’s lots that could be said about it, but there’s one thing in particular I wanted to point out; this trailer shows exactly why Superman is not Jesus, or vice-versa. About mid-way through the trailer we here Jor-El say, “You will give the people of earth an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you. They will stumble, they will fall, but in time, they will join you in the sun. In time you will help them accomplish wonders.” Superman is a figure meant to inspire. He believes in the goodness of humanity, and his goal it provide an example, an ideal, for people to strive towards so that their innate goodness can reach its full potential.
Therein lies the difference between Superman and Jesus. Jesus didn’t come to inspire people to be better, he came to actually make people better. He didn’t come to inspire, he came to change, he came to redeem, and he came to help us do what we could not do on our own. Jesus knows that the truth is people are not basically good; the fact is our nature is sinful (Romans 3:12). We cannot be better, we cannot become “good” on our own; we needed a savior who would just inspire us, but who would do that for us, who would carry us to where previously we could not go. I love Superman, and I think the new trailer looks awesome, but it’s always good to remember there are things even Superman couldn’t do. However, the good news is Jesus could.
