Mark 4:40: “He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
I don’t know that anyone’s ever even suggested it before, and it may even sound a little odd to do so; but I think that Jesus and Darth Vader actually have something in common. One of the many famous scenes with Darth Vader is during the debate on the first Death Star over whether or not that space station was the ultimate power in the universe. Vader stated that the Force was the true ultimate power, something one of the other Imperial officers scoffed at. Vader proceeded to choke him with the Force and said, “I find your lack of faith disturbing.”
Well, I think at times Jesus felt the same way about people’s lack of faith; I think he found it disturbing. How many times did he say something along the lines of “You of little faith” to his disciples? It sort of has the same ring as Vader’s statement. The point is that faith is important. Indeed, it’s one of the driving forces behind our Christian beliefs. Jesus was so adamant about his disciples having faith, strong faith, because he knew it would be the key element in helping them long after he was gone. After all, without faith, it’s impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). So yeah, a lack of faith would be disturbing. Now the good news is Jesus didn’t go around choking people for their lack of faith, rather he helped them find their faith. He demonstrated why they could put their faith in him, and how that faith could be a very powerful force indeed.
Well, that’s just as true today. Jesus still finds a lack of faith disturbing, because he knows we so desperately need it, but he’s also still willing to helps us find that sustaining and powerful faith that’s only found in him.
