So, I don’t know about you, but I was a big fan of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In many ways, it was what I was hoping the prequel trilogy of films would have been, and is some of the best Star Wars story to hit the screen in quite some time. Much to my and many other fans’ dismay, when Disney bought LucasFilm, it was announced that The Clone Wars would end after season five. Don’t get me wrong, five seasons of this show was more than I expected, but still not enough. However, if there’s a bright side to all of this, it’s that Dave Filoni and some of the other creators of The Clone Wars have a new series debuting soon, and it’s sounds just as cool.
Star Wars Rebels was recently announced as the next animated series in the Star Wars universe. This series will be set during the period between Episode III and Episode IV in the film timeline, so it’s certainly one ripe for the picking. The series will be set during a period when the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy, and when the Rebel Alliance is just beginning to form. Among some of the obvious questions are whether or not we’ll see any of Han and the gang, and most certainly one would have to assume that Darth Vader would make an appearance or two; however those types of details haven’t been revealed as of yet.
One interesting tidbit that was revealed was how the art style would reflect that of Ralph McQuarrie. McQuarrie, perhaps more than anyone else, is responsible for giving Star Wars its unique look. For the show, Dave Filoni and co. are taking McQuarrie’s concept art, and instead of concepts, they’re merely designs from an earlier time period leading into Episode IV. It will certainly give the show a unique visual style all its own.
Details about Star Wars Rebels remain scant, but we do know that it will debut on Disney XD.
We’ll keep you posted on any updates, and in the meantime, what are your thoughts on a new show set during this time period?
