Authenticity is a trait valued in others, especially when it comes to those who have a growing sphere of influence. Such is the case with Shopé (Pronounced Shō-pay). While you may be familiar with his work under his previous artist name Spoken, his new self-titled EP really gives a transparent look into his life. It can definitely be seen that with this new name comes fresh music.
“Cinema” opens up the stage as Shopé opens up about the previous year with his encounters with death in his family, getting married, and the wrestle with his calling. This track is appropriately named because it truly allows us a glimpse into Shopé’s humanity.
“Don’t Let Me Stop” continues the journey with synth instrumentation that is reminiscent of the 80’s. The lyrical conversation addresses a common theme found in a lot of CHH today. “Humility and ambitious living, are they opposed?” He continues to talk about the struggle of serving in ministry amidst those who would bring discouragement. This can be a very helpful track for those who want to quit what God has called them to because of difficulty or opposition.
“Mona Lisa (Be Mine)” expresses Shope’s honesty concerning his wife. While the words “I didn’t love you when we first started” might make you want to change the track, he redeems the track with a picture of his devotion to his wife as a reflection of his devotion to Christ. As a husband myself, this track is very encouraging and challenging.
“Confetti” and “The Win” turn up the last part of this EP! Shopé closes out with a strong message of what is means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ and the victory we have as believers. While “Confetti” has a familiar sound to many other tracks out in CHH, “The Win” hits hard with originality musically and lyrically.
There’s no doubt that this is a fresh start for Shopé in many ways, and if you have been a fan of his music as Spoken then you will not be disappointed.
