A sampling of the canned good and socks collected for the Houston Food Bank
On Saturday, November 10 members of Houston’s vibrant and active Christian rap community joined together for a concert and awards show that raised both food and awareness for Houston’s hungry.
The Holy Hip Hop for Hunger event was organized by Von Won and the Kingz Camp crew handed out awards to local hip hop ministries for their efforts throughout the past year. Attendees were asked to contribute 5 canned goods/1 a package of men’s socks (or more) for entry.
Von Won told me there were over 1,000 nonperishable food items and couple hundred pairs of socks collected.
The event was hosted by Ky Meyer of Channel 39′s NewsFix InTune segment
The night kicked off with some praise and worship from the host church’s choir
S.O.M. performed “La Da Da” with Tre9 and their video for the track in the background
G.S., Gifted da Flamethrowa, and Bizzle hung out at the After Party
Still Trill Christian’s AJ McQueen accepted his award for Spoken Word Artist of the Year
Govenor Reiss took home trophies for both Video of the Year (“Little Brother” ) and Male Artist of the Year
Behind-the-scenes servants: DJ Wiz and D. Davis
World Rejects took home the Group of the Year Award and inducted Bless’t as their newest member
Female Artist of the Year Hilary Pradia performed with Second and Corey Paul
I was honored to receive the “Hunger for More” award for contributions to the local Christian hip hop community. Longtime friend Tre9 introduced me with a speech full of more kind words than you can imagine and I got to thank my wife, my parents, and the city of Houston for all their support and great stories throughout the years.
DJ Eazy handled the After Party turntables
Litarodi accepted the Album of the Year Award for his Alive in Christ project
DJ DMD signed autographs at his merch table at the After Party
Trevor Lee was behind the scenes for most of the night but came out to join Von Won for the night’s final performance from the stage
My clip show recap video is below.
Highlights include the New Artist of the Year Award, AJ McQueen‘s spoken word piece, the Baby Isaac Crew performance (Christian hip hop’s first all-original mascot group), the debut of DJ DMD’s “25 Bibles” music video, and a heartfelt award acceptance by DJ Primo‘s widow.
It doesn’t contain everything that went down that night, but should give you a good flavor of the event and an idea of how great it is to see Houston’s Christian rap community come together in unity for the greater good of our city.
