As many of you know, yesterday was the day that Marty McFly of the 1985 classic film “Back To The Future” came into the present. In the future, Marty had an amazing pair of Nike Mags, but are they real now?

Yesterday, Michael J. Fox (Marty McFly) received the first pair of Nike Air Mags and with them a note from the NIKE designer Tinker Hatfield remarking, “As the first, most celebrated wearer’ of the NIKE Mag shoes, ‘we wanted you to be the first to receive a living pair.” The shoes have a motorized mechanism that tightens the laces, guiding them into the correct position. It also cinches at the ankles, tightening with coil spring.

When brought on board 30 years ago, NIKE says they “revinvented the conventional lacing system, integrating it into a inimitable design that became an enduring beacon of popular culture” NIKE then patented the “power laces” in 2009 and auctioned pairs in 2011 to raise over 4.7 million dollars for Parkinson’s Foundation.

As for the future of self-tightening shoes NIKE President and CEO states, “By imagining the future, we create it. Product that comes alive, with on-demand comfort and support when you need, product that senses you and adapts to you is right around the corner.”

The 2015 NIKE Air Mags are a limited edition release that will only be available by auction with all the proceeds to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
