Jam The Hype: Which artists have influenced your sound?

Nico Wells: Before I got saved man, I wasn’t really into a lot of raunchy music. I liked good Hip Hop with a nice message to it so I would always listen to cats like Lupe, Common, Talib Kweli, and The Roots. Coming to Christ, it was just like cool, these cats have a good message, and there are some dope artists. I love KB and FLAME. I like what Social Club is bringing to the table. I like their energy, style, and how they embrace who they are. I love that, somebody who is bringing something new and refreshing to the table. I just like music all around. I like what Marz is doing and SPZRKT to. I love people who have their own style to them.

Jam The Hype: Let’s go back to St. Louis. Thi’sl, FLAME, and Json are from your city. Have you been able to get any advice from them? Is there anything noteworthy that you got from them?

Nico Wells: Honestly bro, one of the things I love most about those guys is that whenever I see them you almost forget that they are who they are. Thi’sl, FLAME, even Json, he is not in St. Louis as much as he used to, but when he does come home and I see him, just the opportunity to chop it up with these cats, it’s like man I have the opportunity to have a relationship with them and a lot of cats look up to these guys. It’s something I don’t take for granted. I really thank God and appreciate the opportunity to know them. Every time I do reach out, they’re showing love and supporting. They are like, “Yo bro, I think you should do this. I think you should go that route. I think this is a good idea.” I’m just sitting here and soaking it in. I’m a sponge, bro. These are some vets. They have been doing it 10 plus years. I take whatever good advice they have for me. Everything has been fantastic working with those cats.

Jam The Hype: Word, I’m hearing there are some rumors that there is a label in St. Louis talking about joining forces with you. Is there any label situations on Nico Well’s table?

Nico Wells: Not to my knowledge, man, haha. I get a lot of questions, especially since I’m on the Clear Sight project. Everybody is asking questions. FLAME has been extremely supportive of me and my career. Just for him showing love and allowing me to be on his project, I’m just humbled by it. I appreciate him for that. Any other ideas, you got to ask the homie FLAME.
