Later that night, after my set in Detroit at the 5E Art Gallery, I continued to witness Mahogany’s willingness to serve and desire to embrace her community in the D’.  The way she excitedly greets and converses with people after my show isn’t a PR move.  It’s very much who she is and who she’s always been from the time I’ve known her as the popular spoken word artist from the Brooklyn independent music scene of ’98.  Not only does Jones love people, she loves working, exchanging ideas, art, and perspectives with them with the hope that it leads to greater cause they can all fight for.  PURE, Volume 1 speaks to Mahogany’s sense of community and shared experiences with others in obvious and subtle ways.  “Lost In Space” features a verse from fellow Detroit MC Lady Chosen that echoes the pain and resolve she and Jonzi share in dealing with the inconsistent relationships with their fathers.  A recent conversation we had, however, revealed that Mahogany is working past the distrust she gained from the void of a consistent father figure in her life.  Also, her relationship with God and life experiences have informed her desire to not seek a mate that’s perfect but one willing to do his best while being led by a perfect God, despite his shortcomings.  It’s a desire for companionship that really comes to life on the PURE track called “Respectable.”
