Lecrae was at the BET Awards this last weekend where he was given the award for Best Gospel/Inspirational artist.  During his acceptance speech he pointed out the influence of Lauryn Hill, Kendrick Lamar, Outkast, and Chance the Rapper have had for bringing spiritual influence into hip hop.  Then he followed up his appearance with a late night tweet saying, “How can you not be proud of Chance?”

In response to the tweet, some Lecrae fans feel that Chance is playing an opportunistic game by capitalizing on spirituality when he hasn’t really internalized it himself, knowing what it means to really follow Christ.  However, Kirk Franklin has spent considerable time with Chance over the last year and says he’s making progress.  Other Lecrae fans, and maybe Lecrae himself, were possibly just putting out feelers for a collaboration.

Regardless, Lecrae handled himself with class and gave thanks to God at the outset, while also giving tribute to those Gospel artists that were on the nomination list.  He was honest in saying that he’s just trying to inspire people and that regardless of who’s doing it, he and others are trying to point people to God.
Do you agree that Chance, and others, should be endorsed as “spiritual” artists and would you like to see a collaboration between him and Lecrae?
