From New York City, indie game developer Mokuni LLC offers us a unique game centered on a simple yet addicting objective of getting a kitten into a box.
Appealing to the adorable nature of kittens and the places, like boxes, they constantly try to get into, Mokuni used this as the main game objective that is accomplished through the simple game mechanic of timing. As you begin the game, you choose the cat that you would like to use and you’re given the choice between easy or hard difficulty.
On easy, you simply have to tap the screen to charge up and release so that your cat reaches the box, yet on hard, you have to tap to charge as well as tap again in order to get into the box. You start with two kittens at first and as you progress, or meet certain scoring goals, others can be unlocked in the future. The scoring amounts to 10pts if you reach the box, and if you reach the fruits past the box, you earn 20pts. If you continue to get the boxes and fruits, the combo count continues to rise each time, earning you even more.
The landscape lends itself to the nature of the game, as it’s set in a cake-filled wonderland of different platform lengths that your cat will have to run across and land in the box. You would think with a game this simple and straightforward that you’d get easily bored, yet it’s so easy to be hooked on this!
I recently attended a PlayTest night put on by NYC Games Forum, where this game was demoed, and I kept trying to beat my last score or combo as it dragged me in. If there’s anything I can say that would enhance the experience of this game, it would be that there should be unique characteristics to each cat you run with, such as the ability to jump or do slow-mo, which I was told will be added in future updates. Another downer is that it’s only available on iOS and recently the Windows Store. I think it would’ve been best to hold off on releasing the game until an Android version was ready for release, But hey, I’m #teamAndroid, so of course I would haha!
This will be a game that appeals to a wide audience of casual gamers. For some, it may be too cute to take seriously, yet as the downloads continue to climb, I see this game having sticking power for at least a season. Don’t take a catnap on this one.
