The last element that I would like to discuss is the all-important “Drum Buss.” Again, if you do not remember from earlier, a drum buss is a group or Aux track where all of your drums are sent before the master fader. So it works like this: The output of the Kick, Snare, Hi Hat, and any other percussive instruments are not sent to the “Master Fader” but are rerouted to the “Drum Buss” and then the drum buss is then rerouted to the Master fader. Now, you might ask, why do that? Because this will open up a world of possibility, like being able to add a compressor here or anything you wish, without affecting any of the other instruments. Cool, huh? As I said, I like to put a Master EQ here just to give the whole drum package even more punch and presence as a unit. It also allows you to get the drums over the beat by simply turning up the drum buss fader and voilà! All of the drums are now turned up at the same time without affecting the balance between the drums themselves.
Well that’s all I have for you guys this time. Do not want to give too much information on only the second lesson, right? Tune in to the next time where we will be discussing the same elements, except instead of EQ techniques, we will be discussing the all important compressor. I hope this helps your instrumentals get to the next level. Christ Mode!
