On September 7, world-renowned 26-year-old hip-hop artist Mac Miller passed away due to an apparent drug overdose.
Mac Miller has been a major musical inspiration to many artists doing music now; especially those in their 20s and 30s. He was one of the most well-known “under 30” hip-hop artists.
“While initially counted as a member of the frat-rap genre of the early 2010s, Miller’s career was defined by a refusal to fit in an artistic box. He transitioned from party rap to heady backpacker lyricism to jazz-inflected songwriting in his final two albums. To do so, he often turned away from guaranteed commercial success in favor of experimentation and craftsmanship in his work.” – Rolling Stone
“Malcolm McCormick, known and adored by fans as Mac Miller, has tragically passed away at the age of 26,” his family said in a statement. “He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans. Thank you for your prayers. Please respect our privacy. There are no further details as to the cause of his death at this time.”
It’s well-documented that Mac Miller had issues with substance abuse. He was arrested for a DUI in May of this year but he was working to not let things like that happen again.
The Billboard-charting artist clearly inspired many in the hip-hop community and will be remembered. Prayers up for his family, friends, and fans.
Substance abuse is an issue in the Hip-Hop community that needs to be discussed more often. Keep those who struggle with drug abuse in prayer and strive to help them through recommending professional help whenever possible.
