David Carr, QB, Fresno State – Carr is flying so low under the radar he may as well be a stealth fighter. Only true college football junkies know about Carr and have watched him play, but if Fresno can run the table and finish undefeated, he may just steal some Heisman votes.
Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia – An argument can be made that Gurley may just be the best player in all of college football. With his unique blend of size and speed, Gurley is a Sunday running back. If he continues to put up good numbers against solid SEC defenses, then he may turn some heads toward Athens.
AJ McCarron, QB, Alabama – All he does is win, and he does it any way he possibly can. It is impossible to mention the Heisman race without mentioning McCarron. He’s the starting quarterback for the number one ranked team in the country, and he continues to play solid football. With no clear cut Heisman favorite at this point, don’t be surprised if McCarron gets some votes if Alabama makes another strong run to the title game.
Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington – Another west coast guy that could get hurt by the lack of coverage in the east. Sankey has quietly run for 732 yards and seven touchdowns for the 4-1 Huskies. He ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns against a Stanford defense that is widely regarded as one of the best defenses in the country. Sankey will have three more games against big time competition that could see him shoot up the list: against Oregon on October 12th, at Arizona State on October 19th, and at UCLA on November 15th.
Braxton Miller, QB, Ohio State – Missing three games against mediocre competition in September has hurt Miller. While playing in these games would have likely just increased his stat total, it wouldn’t have told us much about Miller as a top Heisman candidate. Despite his struggles against Northwestern this past weekend, Miller made the clutch plays when he needed to in order to keep the Buckeyes national title hopes alive. With Ohio State’s remaining schedule set up for Miller to pile up big yardage, he could make a rise up the ballots but his ticket to New York is still largely up in the air.
