I am a huge football fan.
Like really big.
Like in high school and college, I would paint my face, dye my hair, and scream at the top of my lungs at the opposing teams and refs all while cheering on my home squad.
That’s just me.
So you can imagine how excited I get every year when the Super Bowl comes around. It is the zenith of the season where everything comes together and everyone joins in.
Typically, what I am not excited for is the half-time show. The reason why the show even exists is to draw in the casual crowd who may only be watching the game to hang out with friends.
Some years the NFL hits a home run with the musicians that they bring in. Other years, it’s a flop of epic proportions.
This year, I wasn’t too excited about who they had on stage. Now I don’t mean any hate towards Katy Perry, but her music just isn’t my taste. But like any good Super Bowl party, we kept the TV’s locked in, and I watched parts of her performance. I thought she had some dope pieces in there like the huge lion or tiger that she rode in was pretty cool, and of course, who can forget about the meme-making “left shark” that has kept us smirking since that performance.
But what really caught my attention is what she said in an interview after the performance.
She said that God spoke to her.
And that while speaking, He told her, “Don’t worry, you got this.” And then when she was about to take the field, some tech told her, “Don’t worry, you got this.” She then felt as if God was affirming what He said to her earlier through this tech guy.
Since then, the Christian world has gone upside down calling what she said blasphemy and that God would never speak to a heathen like her.
Now I am not here to defend Katy or even confirm that in fact it was God that spoke to her. It could have in fact been gas or someone in her monitors.
I am here to appeal to believers to hopefully create some healthy conversation about all of this.
First, I don’t know whether or not God spoke to her. And honestly, it’s not my place to judge. And neither is it yours.
We all know Katy’s background. Her parents are evangelical pastors, raised her in the church, and she “turned her back” (whatever that means) on Jesus to pursue this life style that glorifies the illuminati and is a servant of Satan. (seriously, people say that about this girl)
But, what I do know is that before her halftime performance, she tweeted out a passage of scripture from Psalms 118:24 to all 64.9 million of her followers, which states, “This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.”
That tells me that 64.9 million people may have heard from God’s word for the very first time.
That’s huge.
Now, I know I may get hate and all that thrown at me because it’s always easier to flex muscles online than to have a healthy conversation about things, but here’s what I think about all of this.
What if God did speak to her?
I mean, can’t God speak to who He wants to speak to?
Didn’t He speak to a murderer in Moses?
Didn’t He use an adulterer in David?
Didn’t He call a man who was a terrorist in Saul to be His chosen messenger to the gentiles?
Before you start looking at what Katy has done, look at what the men above did before God was able to change their lives and transform them.
So, if God was able to use these men, I think that He can definitely use Katy Perry.
Who knows what God is doing in her life? Who knows if God is allowing her this 64.9 million person platform to one day tell them all about how God has transformed her?
That day may or may not ever come, but I tell you one thing, I’m not giving up hope on her and neither should you. Want to know why?
Romans 5, specifically verses 6-8, “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
God redeemed sinners like you and me. If He can do that, why can’t He redeem Katy? I believe that He can, and I will not give up hope on her and will continue to pray for her. Now, I am not saying that she is the next great pastor or evangelist because I do not know, but I do know that God wants me to love her and pray for her.
After all, isn’t that the mission of the Gospel?
And remember, before you go judging her, get the plank out of your eye.
By the way, how does Pete Carroll NOT give the ball to Marshawn Lynch from the half-yard line?
Deuces.
What’s your take?
Katty Perry was Christian rock artist under her real name Kate Hudson. She sold 100 albums… then she kissed a girl and the rest is history.
Good one my good man. Perhaps God spoke to her, who knows??? I don’t see any reason why not?
As for me, I haven’t given up on her either, but you won’t catch me (any day) praying for her salvation. No way Jose!!!
For one, I have relatives, brothers and friends who aren’t born again yet, and I’m travailing for them. Therefore, I don’t have time for her.
Secondly, she has a family whose praying for her soul. And if they’re not, well, I guess we’ll all just watch as she goes straight to hell, now, wouldn’t we?
Thirdly, I don’t like her style or genre of music. I don’t like her music or personality at all (except for Hot n’ Cold, I like that one).
So good luck with your life Katy!!!
“Good one my good man. Perhaps God spoke to her, who knows??? I don’t see any reason why not?”
So let me get this straight… you believe that the God of the universe who HATES SIN SO MUCH that He sent His Son to be tortured and murdered bearing the SIN HE HATES on His shoulders, would cosign and encourage a pop star with the words “Don’t worry, I got you” before she goes on stage to celebrate homosexuality amongst other SINS THAT HE HATES?
Don’t wanna put words in your mouth, just wanna know if I have this correct.
God could be trying to convict her, but I KNOW He wouldn’t have said ‘you got this’ and what not. But be careful with the way you word things, because if God didn’t speak to anyone before they were saved, He would have never spoken to anyone, and no one would have gotten saved. I understand your motives and what you mean, but others may not. Peace
Why WOULDN’T God speak to her? If you want to listen, He will speak. It doesn’t matter if you left the Christan music path and did some unsavory things in secular music. Katy is not the worst out there by any means. She can still listen to what God has to say.
We have to be wiser than this. God does not encourage sin, (which is exactly what Katy Perry was implying). I can guarantee you, with all certainty that the God of the universe who HATES SIN SO MUCH that He sent His Son to be tortured and murdered bearing the SIN HE HATES, did not speak to Katy Perry in her celebration of homosexuality amongst other sins with the words’ “Don’t worry you got this”. It goes against His Holy, and Blameless Nature, and we are in a hurt locker if we believe that we are following Him but can’t discern the difference.
It is not honoring God when a person quotes scripture and then misrepresents His Character. It is quite the opposite, and is consistent with how Satan manipulates through
subtlety (Genesis 3). We as believers have to be so in love with Christ and His Word that we see the lie and are not afraid to call it out in front of 64.9 million who may be led astray, (not condemnation, but that’s wisdom).
My whole thing in all this is not if God can speak to an unbeliever or sinner but that He would encourage her sinful ways (songs). We don’t know why God does things, but He also won’t go against His own Word.
So answer me this: when God used the pagan Assyrians to capture, imprison, and/or deport king Hoshea and the Israelites in 2 Kings 17, was He going against His Word? How about when He used the prostitute Rahab, who lied (double-whammy) in order to protect two of Joshua’s spies from the king of Jericho? Was He going against His Word then?
I think the point the author makes is that it doesn’t really matter if God spoke that specific message to KP or not. He’s given her a platform, and she honored Him by proclaiming His Word to 64.9 million people.
Instead of condemning someone for the tiny twinkling of the Light that she tries to show, why don’t we pray that God continue to work on His child, whom He loves (Proverbs 3:12)? I’m not talking about you specifically, Fuego, but sometimes, us Christians get so uppity and holier-than-thou that we forget to love others lol.
I’ll answer you: Without going into a lengthy bible study on this, I will try to be as concise as possible by saying that any time God used the nations to discipline His people, He held them accountable for their sin… so much so, that often times He would later destroy the same people He used to discipline Israel with for sinning against His people in that way.
In other words, God allowed the Assyrians to do what they always wanted to do. He didn’t encourage their sin by saying’ “Don’t worry you got this, I’m hear with you”. He just removed His hedge of protection from around Israel and the rest is History. It was the same with Pharaoh and later with the Pharisees. God did not encourage Pharaoh by saying “Don’t worry you got this, I’m with you” now go on sinning against me. He hardened Pharaoh’s heart by allowing Pharaoh to live out what was in his heart. Nor did He encourage the Pharisees by saying “Don’t worry you got this, I’m with you”, now go and kill My Son. He hardened the Pharisees hearts by not softening their hearts towards the Son of God. This is what the Wrath of God looks like according to Romans 1. God does not encourage sin, but He does allow it for His purposes.
With all of this being said, it is of most importance that we differentiate btw the two, otherwise, we will be guilty of cosigning in front of 64.9 million viewers that God encourages us to sin against Him. We have to be wiser than this. I can guarantee you, with all certainty that God did not encourage Katy Perry to sin against Him in her celebration of homosexuality with the words’ “Don’t worry you got this”, or any other words of encouragement for that matter. It goes against His Holy, and Blameless Character, and we are in a hurt locker if we believe that we are following Him but we don’t know Him well enough to discern the difference. Therefore, your Assyrian analogy would be null and void in this particular context.
I think you are misinterpreting my point. I don’t argue for a moment that KP’s lifestyle doesn’t match up verse for verse with the Bible. I also didn’t say that He told her, “you got this.” Rather, I’m saying that instead of shunning, condemning, and judging her for trying to glorify God, we should pray that she makes some lifestyle changes to glorify Him more.
What is the Scripture she tweeted? “This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.” In its base form, KP is acknowledging: 1) that there is a Creator; 2) that He has created; and 3) that she is pleased with His creation. If she had tweeted out something like Matthew 12:18, I think there would be greater cause for scrutiny. But you don’t have to have a thriving personal relationship with the Father to recognize that He creates all.
Maybe this was her way of saying something else. Maybe it was her saying, “God I KNOW I’ve done a lot of evil, but I also know that acknowledging that your creation is beautiful brings me joy and peace. Help me to reconcile my lifestyle choices with You!” Perhaps not! Maybe she was (falsely) implying, “God is pleased with all my actions.” The bigger issue though to me is that regardless of her intentions, many of us Christians aren’t loving. I get that in war, you want to identify and differentiate your allies from your enemies, but God has called us above all to love. In fact, He said the loving God first and then our neighbor are the greatest commandments (Matt 22:35-40).
All I’m arguing is that I believe Christians should be quicker to love than condemn. I’m not really one for internet debates, so if you want to discuss this more, just message me (I think you can do that w/ disqus).
So true!
Great article and great point of view!!! Keep the good posts comin fo real and love the end of the article, “After all, isn’t that the mission of the Gospel?”
I see what you’re saying, and perhaps the Holy Spirit is working on her heart, slowly bringing her to repentance, but I don’t believe that God would have said to her, ‘Don’t worry. You got this.’ That would be affirming her lifestyle and music. So I don’t believe God spoke to her. She doesn’t “got this”. She needs the gospel, and if God were speaking to her, He would have given it to her. Hope she does come to repentance, tho. What an amazing testament to God’s power it would be… come to think of it, what an amazing testament to God’s power is my own salvation! None of us deserve what has been given freely by Christ!
LOVE this article! Well written and thought out.
One thing not said below here is that she’s under contract, we don’t know what God is doing in her life, we don’t know the changes that have taken place in her spirit by His Spirit…and she’s under contract. Give it time, let it play out and pray (if you have the time and inclination).
I didn’t watch the show, because I knew what was coming. I’m fighting for my purity. No, I’m not trying to sound better than anybody. I’m just speaking the truth. However, my friend did write me and tell me that Katy performed the, “I kissed a girl” song. So, while she may have quoted the book of Psalms to 64.9 million followers, she also poisoned the bunch who followed her to the show. We must remember that, just because people quote scripture doesn’t mean that they have any interest in or devotion to our Master. That’s no different than the Gangster rapper who climbs on stage and says, “I’d like to thank God.” Thank Him for what? He didn’t give you those filthy lyrics. That’s equivalent to saying, “Thank you God for helping me sin against You.” While they’re right in thanking Him for the gift, they’re wrong in crediting Him for the product. We mustn’t forget Second Timothy 3:5. As many of the brethren have said, God would not go against Himself and affirm a sinful and sin promoting performance. He’s righteous. According to Christianity Today, Katy has said that she is not a Christian. With that being said, what god spoke to her? Although there is only one true and living God, Christians aren’t the only ones who call Him that, nor are Christians the only ones who quote the Bible. There is one God and one who pretends to be. Although Katy’s parents may be servants of our Master, God has no grandchildren. He only has children. She needs to have her own relationship with Him, and the fruit to prove it, which is why we should keep praying for her. Sure, she is under contract, however, following Jesus always costs us something. To continue in the same direction doesn’t show commitment, and that goes for all believers. Could or would God speak to her? Absolutely, but I can’t believe that it would be to encourage her, or to help her to get over her butterflies. “You got this.” I can’t agree with that. When God spoke to the servants mentioned above, what followed? Was it not repentance and obedience? The same cannot be said in the case of Katy. We should absolutely continue to pray for her, but we shouldn’t follow her, nor should the saints of God be in attendance at her concerts, nor should we buy her music. Our money is only an encouragement to her career. You don’t need to see Katy Perry, or any other artist’s videos in order to pray for them. “Oh, I’m just going to watch so that I know exactly what to pray for.” Stop it, fam! A few more things. Number one, thanks for your article, because it’s given many a needle to inject truth. Secondly, God doesn’t need Katy Perry, but He wants her. He can give anyone her platform. Finally, for anyone to assume that Katy turned her back on God would imply that they were absolutely sure that she had a relationship with Him in the first place. What her parents eat don’t make her full. She needs her own relationship. Just my take. No hate here.
I’m surprised (maybe I’m not) at all those here without sin who have cast their stone.
God is speaking today and in a way that we can relate to and understand. The Gospel is preached in many different languages. There are also different translations, I’m sure our great grandparents would scoff at The Message, NLT, NIV, etc. “If you truly loved God, you’d read and do everything to understand King James”.
“If you truly loved God, you’d read and do everything to understand King James”.
Which version of the Bible is this in… NIV, NLT, King James. Just curious, cause I thought it was all about fruit and delight. So obviously I missed that passage of scripture.
My take is, he should have given the ball to Marshawn Lynch on the 1 yard line……just saying.
Yup…my thoughts exactly. – ML
Awesome article, bro. Very well written, thought out and expressed.
At some point in her life she will be humbled and God will speak in a way that she will know that He is the great I AM. I feel sad for her and her family and I pray for true reconciliation with her family and her heavenly father.
We can conclude that God did not tell her “you got this” based off of scripture. God does not delight in evil. Y’all are just making a big deal about this because she’s Katy Perry. If Pookie, down the street, would have said God told him “u got this” before he started pushing drugs, you’d tell him that God doesn’t encourage sin.
We’ve got to stop being so concerned about twitter followers, record sales, and status. God was saving souls way before FB, Twitter, and IG.
YES,YES,YES! Thank you for bringing reason to this unsound argument!
See that is the problem with
people, and this is an example of why JESUS says his people are destroyed due
to lack of knowledge. What makes anyone think she is referring to GOD/JESUS?
She could be referring to the god she has chosen to serve, Satan. Why would
GOD/JESUS tell her “she’s got this” while performing at a ritualistic
football game? Why would the LORD encourage to sing her songs that do not edify
HIM? He would not! People tend to forget that Satan is a god to some. The LORD
says you shall know them by their fruits. I see her for the fruit she bears. No
judgment, just discernment. She was not talking about the KING of KINGS!
Perhaps you should be discipled a little more before you continue to write such bold, (yet doctrinally/ theologically incorrect) blogs to God’s people. There are many babes on this site and you could be leading them astray with bad theology. You have a powerful platform, please don’t take it lightly! Before you presume to speak the heart of God, make sure that you are studied and even go a step further by submitting your writings to established men of God who are studied and well equipped with good fruit.
None of us wants to be that guy with good intentions who ends up working against the Spirit of Christ due to a lack of understanding. Therefore, b/c other sheep are listening to you, it is imperative that you are accurate about God’s thoughts and commands, b/c you are presuming to speak for Him. I can’t stress that enough. You are not just giving your opinion about the football game, you are presuming to speak for God. DO NOT TAKE THIS LIGHTLY. We all will be held accountable for leading His Sheep astray.
I will be in prayer for you. God Bless!
By the way, A.J Harris and Wonderer seems to have given biblically solid statements on the matter. I’m not cosigning everything they wrote, but from the jump, they seem to be on point.
Well said on all counts. I think you hit on everything in just the right way to get folks out of their stereotypical Christian headspace without necessarily agreeing to the things she’s about. The Bible talks about knowing people by their fruit but no one is faultless and without error in their lives.
There may be some clear contradictions to what she’s saying and showing in her music and what she portrays herself to be about but at the end of the day, there are those that began with a foundation in the Lord and though they may get lost in the way called life, they may not entirely forget the Word just as she didn’t — and it may be that later in life her upbringing or something significant in her life will bring her back fully surrendered at the cross. Train up a child in the Lord and when they grow old, they won’t depart from it. Unfortunately, we know not everybody makes it and they may completely turn away or not even reach an old age and die with a life turned away from God. But that doesn’t mean she’s that person.
Where there is fame, there is a crowd with opinions. Most of our journeys are messy ones that would make others point the finger (and not everyone’s life is on film or media for the world to see) but God’s unfailing love extends beyond all of that and can reach us out of darkest places if we let Him. Good article.
Hey JTH, I’ve been thinking about it and I’m just curious on how I can work for you guys. Are any openings available? Being a Christian, an assistant editor with a Bachelor’s in multimedia journalism and a Christian singer/songwriter and music lover who has an album and single out on iTunes and online, working with you guys would be way up my alley compared to where I am now as well as enjoyable. Could you guys steer me in the right direction?? Please and thanks!
Hey there! Email our Managing Editor, Mike Laxton, at mike@jamthehype.com and we can go from there!
I will! Thanks for the response! Much appreciated!
Just heard Katy on Elvis Duran’s morning show yesterday in an interview (Tuesday 3/10/15) and thought of this blog. She still holds on to the knowledge and acceptance that their is a higher power out there beyond herself (i.e. the universe, karma, some supernatural being, etc.) so she doesn’t center her life solely on herself. She also said that she listened to gospel music before performing the Super Bowl halftime show that night.
However, she doesn’t regard God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit — she simply believes what good you give out will come back around (karma). Sounds like the training is instilled in her but misguided at the moment. We’ve all lost our way before. Now, was she hearing from God? The answer for “no” is pretty clear but we are ALL merely two steps away from being in connection with the one true God — it requires repentance and establishing/reestablishing Christ into your heart and life.
