“Ricochet” is a song on Airborne about bouncing back after facing setbacks. “During this album I had so many setbacks, so many obstacles, and I felt like giving up so many times, but I didn’t.” The song took about two years to finish and had four different choruses before settling on the fifth one that made it to the album. He thinks the message of the song relates to Romans 8:18, saying
Everything that we’re going through now is nothing compared to what that which God has in store for us, and I think the message of “Ricochet” kind of brought that message into perspective.
Some of his U.K. features include singer Vickytola and well-known rappers S.O. and Jahaziel. S.O. is a cousin of Faith Child, and they made their first song together in 2005. It is a song that “no one has heard, we didn’t even record it, but we have an MP3 somewhere on our laptop.”
He normally writes his songs before hearing a beat, then asks a producer to make a beat that would fit his lyrics. “Probably eighty percent of the songs on the album were written before being laid onto the beat.” Aside from Black Knight, he worked with U.K. producers such as Victizzle, DJ Ace, Smiley, and GKiD.
I like my music to stay in the popular realm… there’s only so far one can go with a rap chorus. Having a singer on your hook gives it kind of an edge to cross over into an R&B kind of section.
