Urban Youth Workers Institute Announces Conference Theme for 2016!
Urban Youth Workers Institute’s (UYWI) 2016 National Conference theme will be “Agents of Disruption / DisruptTheDarkness”. The theme is focused on responding to the spiritual darkness felt in our urban communities by those suffering from the effects of systemic oppression, fatherlessness, gangs, drugs, violence and poverty. With God’s very first words in Genesis 1:3 “Let there be light”, God disrupted the darkness. When Jesus began his ministry, it was said of him in Matthew 4:16 “The people who live in darkness, have seen a great light”, referring to a fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah. We are also called to be “the light of the world” Matthew 5:14 and are told to “…live as people of light” Ephesians 5:8. UYWI seeks to empower and embolden youth workers to be Agents of Disruption, to DisruptTheDarkness by amplifying the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in their communities.
The UYWI National Conference is the premiere urban conference for youth workers. It features UYWI’s unique brand of practical and innovative training focused to help those doing youth ministry in urban communities located in the hardest parts of the city. The conference lineup of speakers, trainers and artists featured each year understand the urban context because most have lived it. This year the diverse lineup includes Sammy Rodriguez, Gail Song Bantum, Greg Stier, Sophia Cox, Brian Loritts and Albert Tate. The conference also features music by Christon Gray, Angie Rose and JGivens. Our powerful lineup of over 90 workshops includes veteran trainers D.A. Horton, Jeff Wallace, Kathy Khang, Tommy Nixon, Eric Mason, Luma Haddad and more.
In 2016 the conference will also showcase a Creative Festival which will run throughout the conference and will include interviews with artists, special performances, an art walk and film shorts. The Festival will welcome DJ Icy Ice, Photographer Ryan Longnecker and cinematographer Artie Delgado. UYWI is currently welcoming letters of interest from other visual artists, performance artists and cinematic artists who would like to participate in the festival.
