“One night my mom went to get a pistol so when he kicked the door in, she shot him. I was probably eight [years old] around then and remember seeing my dad bleeding, blood pouring down his leg, the whole nine.”

When Corey was nine years old, his stepfather committed suicide. “You’ve got this woman who’s trying to balance all of this life, drug addiction, being fired, cars being repossessed, bills, teenagers running through Houston. It’s H-Town, its screwed up music, its pills, money, so I’m a teenager trying to do all of this stuff.” He says that in the way he was living, he was trying to kill himself, but not knowing it.

“Eventually my homie would find God and come back and tell me, straight up, ‘Yo, you need to find the Lord or else you’ll probably end up dead in these streets.’”
