He joined the Air Force in 2000 after graduating from high school, and he often sung the national anthem at various Air Force ceremonies. In 2005, a co-worker of his “used to invite me up to the school where he was at taking a Music Engineering and Recording course, he let me come into their studio, and we just started recording.” When Sean C. Johnson let some people hear the music that he had been recording, he received lots of positive feedback encouraging him to keep making music.
From there God started opening doors. I would sing at one event and someone would see me there. They invite me to another event, etc.
He then released his first album Simply a Vessel in 2006, which was followed by Simply a Vessel Vol. 2 in 2009 and Simply a Vessel Vol. 3 in 2012. Since he had stopped rapping in 1993, his first time back rapping was not until 2011 when he rapped on a song by Dre Murray & Wit called “Ego,” which also featured Eshon Burgundy. “That’s the first time I actually laid something down, in decades almost. It really sparked my interest back into rapping.”
He released a well-received five song EP with a mix of singing and rapping in September 2013 called Grateful and wanted to put out another one. This next EP ended up being Circa 1993.
It was really organic. Believe it or not, it [Circa 1993] actually started out as a five song EP.
He really liked the music being made and was motivated to turn it into a full album. “I’m kind of re-introducing myself to a lot of new people. I thought ‘what better way to do that than to tell my origins’ story more or less.’ This album gave me the opportunity to start at the beginning and re-tell my story.”
His favorite song that he has made is actually a Neo-Soul remix he did to Kirk Franklin’s “Silver & Gold” on his Grateful EP. “If I could make a whole album of just that type of song, I would definitely do that. I think it really represents my sound well.”
