Jam The Hype: Who is Aaron Cole as a musical artist? It’s a big question.
Aaron: Aaron Cole is someone that’s going to bring that Hip-Hop, turn up, but still at the same time, I have some Gospel roots. I’m going to bring that worship, heavy worship, contemporary. I’m a good mix of everything so I’m glad to say that I am a part of Mixed Bag, because I’m a good mix of everything.
JTH: How did you become a part of Mixed Bag Entertainment?
Aaron: One day, I was scrolling on Twitter and I saw that [Mixed Bag Entertainment was] doing a contest for the best 16. I went to my dad and said, “They’re doing a contest, I want to enter it.” He was like, “Cool, let me know what they say to do and let me know the next step.” The next day they posted saying that you have to pre-order the album. At that time, I didn’t have the money to pre-order the album so I wasn’t even going to enter. I was like, “Ah, just forget it.” My dad asked the next day, “What happened to the Mixed Bag thing?” and I was like, “They said you had to pre-order the album, I didn’t have the money, so I just gave up.” He got so mad and told me that he had failed as a father if I had stopped at the first obstacle that I met. Long story short, he gave me the ten dollars, and I entered the contest. I did my verse and became a finalist. At the semifinals, they had forgotten to mention my name, and I was like, “Wait, I thought I was a part of the semifinals?” and [Gary Crockett of Mixed Bag) was like, “My bad, you are a part of it.” I knew something good was going to happen and that God was going to bless me with it because the Enemy kept trying to block me. I ended up winning to contest and met up with one of the label heads, Gary Crockett. He was like, “We weren’t looking to sign anybody, but we listened to your music,” and we started going through the process then. It was a long process but we finally got it. I’m signed with Mixed Bag and it feels great.
JTH: What was the name of the song that you were a part of on their Normal Is Overrated album, who was on it, and how was making music with them?
Aaron: The song that I was featured on was “Shipwrecked,” and it came from my EP Fifteen Is the New XV. It featured my aunt and uncle. My aunt was on the hook, and my uncle did the last verse. It was great to be a part of my first national release. All the guys on [Normal Is Overrated] did their work. My man Prazy1 did his thing. TJ Pompeo, Promise, and Da’ T.R.U.T.H. all did their thing on the project, and I was happy to be a part of it. I felt like I got a great response from that, so if you haven’t gotten that project, go get it.
