He started working on the album in March 2014 soon after his EP Never Land was released. In April 2014 he got engaged and had to put music on hold. Planning his wedding while working on an album did not work very well. After his honeymoon, he went on the Anomaly Tour with Lecrae, but had difficulties making music on the road. The album was originally supposed to be released in January 2015, but did not come out until mid-September.

Though he didn’t have an album ready, he did have some music and was sharing it with those around him, and “the feedback I just kept on getting is that it didn’t sound like a cohesive album.” He connected with producer illmind and showed him this music. Andy Mineo said that Illmind was inspired “and he loved to jump on board to help see the project through to the end.”

He said that they traveled to California to work on the album with Gawvi, Alex Medina, and Joseph Prielozny. “We went out there, we rented a house [with] Airbnb for a week and just worked on new music and started crafting the album together…” He says that the final stages of the album occurred in that setting.
