A sampling of the canned good and socks collected for the Houston Food Bank

On Saturday, November 10 members of Houston’s vibrant and active Christian rap community joined together for a concert and awards show that raised both food and awareness for Houston’s hungry.

The Holy Hip Hop for Hunger event was organized by Von Won and the Kingz Camp crew handed out awards to local hip hop ministries for their efforts throughout the past year. Attendees were asked to contribute 5 canned goods/1 a package of men’s socks (or more) for entry.

Von Won told me there were over 1,000 nonperishable food items and couple hundred pairs of socks collected.

I was honored to receive the “Hunger for More” award for contributions to the local Christian hip hop community. Longtime friend Tre9 introduced me with a speech full of more kind words than you can imagine and I got to thank my wife, my parents, and the city of Houston for all their support and great stories throughout the years.

My clip show recap video is below.

Highlights include the New Artist of the Year Award, AJ McQueen‘s spoken word piece, the Baby Isaac Crew performance (Christian hip hop’s first all-original mascot group), the debut of DJ DMD’s “25 Bibles” music video, and a heartfelt award acceptance by DJ Primo‘s widow.

It doesn’t contain everything that went down that night, but should give you a good flavor of the event and an idea of how great it is to see Houston’s Christian rap community come together in unity for the greater good of our city.
