Toronto, Canada-based emcee Promise, who is signed to Da’ T.R.U.T.H.‘s Mixed Bag Entertainment, talked to Jam The Hype about his friendship with hip-hop superstar Drake.
“We met on the set of Degrassi,” Promise said. “Before then he wasn’t even rapping. I was a student and he was a regular cast as everybody knows. A mutual friend introduced us because he heard me rap and was like ‘Yo, you’re dope. I think my boy would like you.’ He wrote some stuff and rapped it to me in the hallway. I thought it was dope. I invited him to my studio. We started working and from there, that was it, everything just started bubbling from there. He started getting label interest. I put him on Myspace. When he was on BET first, my mom called me like ‘Aubrey is on TV! What’s going on?'”
Promise has also collaborated with artists like Royce Da 5’9, Jhené Aiko, Skyzoo and Slum Village, among others. Da’ T.R.U.T.H., who is known for not collaborating with mainstream artists, is allowing Promise to be himself.
“That’s it,” Promise said in an interview with JTH. “I’m going to let Promise be Promise. That’s the best answer. He knows my heart. He knows my lifestyle. He trusts the God in me. About where he is at in his decisions and stuff like that, you got to ask him when he is out here.”
Da’ T.R.U.T.H. talked about his change of approach to collaborations in a 2014 interview with Jam The Hype’s Chris Chicago. Read about Da’ T.R.U.T.H.’s stance on Christian & Mainstream artists collaborating HERE.
Promise is gearing up to release new music in the near future. He has an unreleased project that features No Malice, Montell Jordan, MC Jin, artists from Reach Records and Collision Records, Skyzoo, Buckshot, and more.
Promise is on our lists of artists poised to blow up in 2015.
