Eight-time Grammy Award winner Lauryn Hill inspires Lecrae. In a 2014 interview with Essence Magazine, the Anomaly-crafter spoke on how Lauryn Hill’s song, “Adam Lives in Theory,” nourishes him spiritually.
Lecrae said, “It’s amazing. Oh man, there’s so many levels and layers to it. Obviously, conceptually, the picture it paints of humanity. I think we need to be reminded of our frailty. Emotionally, it kind of draws you out and reaches inside – and everybody wants to be drawn out. You don’t hear a lot of music that you feel like, ‘Oh my gosh, you just pulled my soul out and put it on display.’ I think that’s what that song did for me.”
In a visual by The Boombox, Lecrae names Lauryn Hill and Outkast as two of his influences because they are unafraid to be themselves.
It appears that we will be seeing Lecrae and Lauryn Hill collaborate for a project in the future. What kind of project it will be hasn’t been revealed yet but Lecrae gave his fans some clues on it in a new 2015 Essence Magazine story.
“Yea, I got a phone call from my management and they said they got a phone call from Lauryn Hill’s camp,” Lecrae said after being asked if any of the artists he grew up looking up to have reached out to him. “They said she reached out and asked about me doing an interview for a project she was working on. When I heard that I was even being considered by her, I was like, ‘Are you serious right now? Why are you asking me if I’m interested?’ You should just ask, ‘could you get on a flight right now?’”
On February 8 of 2015, Lecrae won his second Grammy Award. This time for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song “Messengers” featuring for KING & COUNTRY. Crae took home a Grammy for Best Gospel Album in 2013 for Gravity.
