Wise choices and understanding of this life and God’s Word is the basis for Surf Gvng‘s ministry straight out of the book of Proverbs. Such inner characteristics are necessary tools to survive the streets of South Beach in Wolf Atoned and Certi5ed Geek’s beach culture. Between Spring Breakers, summer getaways, and an escape from reality, it’s the ideal fusion reaching those in desperate need of Christ.
Born Joel Davis and Jerome Nelson respectively, each were caught up within South Beach’s urban culture composed of gang activity, drugs, and creative ways to earn money. “I added to the crime rate daily in Miami,” represented words spoken from Certi5ed’s mindset, simply trying to survive. Several felonies later drove Certi5ed and Wolf to their collective artistic talents and eventually to the light of a newborn faith. Coupled between music and visual artistry, Surf Gvng set out to minster to their surrounding beach communities on top their long boards blaring that Jesus music.
Surf Gvng released their debut single nearly a year ago in September 2013 entitled “Bang Dis.” Formally branded as KYMG, this duo fine-tuned a certified street banger from the start. Classic Dirty South flow and 808’s hitting hard enough to shake up hell, Certi5ed and Wolf’s lyrics begun with a strong foundation acquiring notice from industry elites such as Thi’sl, Social Club, KB, and Da’ T.R.U.T.H.
The entire self-titled EP was released on June 30, 2014 as a free project, available HERE. Two standout tracks are “Stuntin” and “Sonic Boom” featuring Marty (@deathbymartymar) from those Social Club misfits.
The southern-coined term stuntin’ was made famous by Cash Money Millionaires glorifying possessions, wealth, and that materialistic mentality. Surf Gvng put their faith on spotlight and highlight how stuntin’ for Jesus appears to the common public. The only boasting is directed towards our Savior, not anything money can bring forth. The catchy hook echoing the words of “I ain’t worried about tomorrow” solidifies how we should live for today and not to worry within the reassurance that Jesus provides faithful followers.
A wave of irony follows us to breaking down the track “Sonic Boom.” Those familiar with Social Club’s antics and genuine love for Christ may notice quite a few similarities to the style and “souled out” feel Surf Gvng presents to the genre. That and well, both duos are based out of the Miami region. Martymar’s bars meshed seamlessly with Wolf Atoned and Certi5ed Geek’s lyrical output. One must foresee future pairings between these two misfit gangs. The words of “come and surf with these misfits and you’ll never be the same,” should be a battle cry for us as Christians generally speaking worldwide.
Making skinny jeans and tank tops hip again, Surf Gvng’s self-titled track confirms the lifestyle these cats represent and how unashamed for the Gospels they present themselves to be. The track chronicles how drastically Jesus has reinvented their lives and presents their storyline of faith. You can only be encouraged and motivated to learn more about this Jesus that is made priority verse after verse throughout the entire project.
Wolf Atoned and Certi5ed Geek caught a wave of success with their debut EP offering. A natural southern flow, slick beats with simple hooks, and an image few are imitating. After all, how often do rappers who surf, skate, and flow as sick as Surf Gvng surface? A rarity? Yes. However, a welcomed addition to the game and masses as souls are won for Christ. Now, even the boardwalks and southern beaches are smothered in faith-driven hip-hop. To God Be the Glory!
