The next installment in the Bourne franchise gets a release date and we also have an official confirmation on who will direct it! We reported to you several weeks ago that Fast & Furious 6 director, Justin Lin, was being eyed to helm the fifth film in the well loved and very successful Bourne franchise, and today Universal is confirming that it is now a done deal. Justin Lin will be directing, and he will also be producing with his Perfect Storm Entertainment group alongside longtime Bourne producers, Frank Marshall, Jeffrey Weiner, and Ben Smith. We are also hearing that Jeremy Renner will be returning to star as Aaron Cross, and the new film is said to be a sequel to the 2012, Tony Gilroy directed The Bourne Legacy. As far as the script goes, it looks like Invictus and Sherlock Holmes writer Anthony Peckham is still in charge of writing it. Summer 2015 is already jammed packed with “must see movies” like Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Man of Steel sequel, and Jurassic World but that didn’t scare or stop Universal from putting this next Bourne movie into the mix by giving it an August 14th, 2015 release. It’s biggest competition will come from the Michael Fassbender starrer Assassin’s Creed, the adaptation of the popular video game that will hit theaters the previous week on August 7th. The Bourne Legacy enjoyed some success back in 2012 at the box office bringing in around 276 million worldwide, but we will just have to wait and see how the legacy will fare against these other competitive franchises. But what do you think? Do you think that the Bourne franchise is in good hands with Justin Lin? And how do you think the movie will perform in the busy 2015 summer slate? Let us know, and as always you gotta make sure you are tweeting us your thoughts as well over on Twitter at ClevverMovies. I’m your host, Erin Robinson, and I will see you next time.
